The founders

Gilles Bergeron

Since 1976, leather has created in him an unusual interest and fascination. He found in this material an inexhaustible source of inspiration. As soon as his first creations were sold, he opened a first boutique in Jonquière: the “Mains Agiles”.

Since that time, Gilles Bergeron has taken part in several exhibitions including the Salon des Métiers d’Art in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean and Montreal in addition to the Toronto salon (One of a Kind). 1987 marked the start of a new store concept: Conception Cuir, a boutique workshop where people came to order made-to-measure items or buy a particular product. Gilles has developed over the years an impressive expertise in the manufacture of furniture.

Using high-end materials, it draws inspiration from recognized techniques for padding and structures that combine beauty, strength and durability.

He uses cow and water buffalo leathers with natural dyes that give the furniture flexibility and comfort. Sensitive to sustainable development, this craftsman is also interested in the restoration of old furniture when it has an interesting design or for their quality of manufacture.

Danielle Tremblay

The boutique workshop saw the arrival of a new partner in 1995: Danielle Tremblay. Born in Lac – St-Jean, she grew up on the ancestral farm, surrounded by the grandiose landscapes of the region.

After graduating from college in arts in 1981, she moved to Montreal to pursue a career in real estate. It was in 1995 that she met Gilles Bergeron who introduced her to leatherwork. She then returns to the places of her childhood where she begins to refine various techniques related to the production of furniture and utilitarian objects such as log bags, reading lights, purses and briefcases.

Throughout the exhibitions during which the owner duo of Conception Cuir won several awards, Danielle Tremblay continued her research related to color and patterns which soon gave birth to the production that has occupied her since: relief drawing on leather.

Through iconography in which imaginary characters and animals sometimes emerge, she reveals her astonishing mastery of balance and harmony. Gifted with an innate sense of color and leaving plenty of room for spontaneity in her compositions, Danielle has given back its nobility to a technique neglected by many and often poorly appreciated.
